Recent Activities H.E.F.T.Y. Kids are always busy. Here are a few photo's from our recent adventures on the fireing range,
Conservation Projects, and learning about game bird propagation
This group was a great group of kids. With donations made from several people and companies
around the Gillette Wyoming area we were able to invent a new way to learn conservation.
The Hunter Education course was really great with this group, the class average test score
was 91.2%. The score is well above the typical score showing that these kids were really serious
about getting their cards and starting the trip down the hunting trails.
With winter in full force cleaning a land area or planting to improve habitat was not a feasible
plan so we tried a new method to learn conservation principles. This class built stunt kites
and played a game of predator VS. prey. Or at least that was the intention. For the first time in
Wyoming history there was no wind so flying kites became a huge chore. The kids had a ton of fun
painting, pasting, and cutting out animals to attach to their kites. The intention was to use velcro on
the animals and then the predators would knock the prey off the kites thus simulating a kill. After the
predators have killed off the prey they would starve and be eliminated from play. This would cause the
prey to rebound into abundant numbers and eventually the prey would be put back into play. The outcome
of the game is that youths can see how natural conservation cycles through periods of abundant prey animals that
could cause damage to the habitat they are in to the next period with abundant predators causing prey animals
to decline in numbers. This is adapted to a plan where hunting is introduced to help control the numbers of
predators and prey animals. In the usual fashion, kids being kids, this class decided that every animal placed on
a kite turned out to be a predator. Giving the lack of wind the kids still had a great time trying to fly their kites
and the volunteers helping the kids were truly enjoying helping the kids.
In typical fashion, every youth wants to be a predator.
Without volunteers, conservation projects like this would be impossible.
It might have been the next day, but the kites finally became airborn.
